August 2000
Millenium
Finncon, the Finnish national science fiction convention
in the year 2000 is now in progress. Bigger than
ever this time Finncon and the annual Comics Festival
are combining forces for an unforgettable weekend
in the centre of Helsinki. The twin festival is
called Images and Imagination and is an official
programme item of the Helsinki 2000, European City
of Culture project.
Finncon
Ths
is the eighth Finncon since 1989. The con has always
had free admission and our programme items have
attracted both fans and a more general audience
in the hundreds. Our total attendance averages a
couple thousand visitors each time. All aspects
of sf and related genres have been included: facts
and fiction, fantasy and hard core, fanzines and
television - even role playing games. Guests of
honour in the previous
years include Iain Banks, Terry Pratchett, Norman
Spinrad, Bruce Sterling, Bryan Talbot...
Comics
Festival
The
festival has a long history having been organised
since 1972. Usually held in the city centre like
Finncon and also free of charge this show handles
everything from Donald Duck to underground and manga
to newspaper strips with expertise. Previous guests
of honour include Carl Barks, Will Eisner and Gilbert
Shelton - not forgetting young promises like Anke
Feuchtenberger, Max, Julie Doucet...
European
City of Culture
This
is not just a couple of words. Being one of the
European Cities of Culture is a great honour and
is celebrated through the entire year 2000 in Helsinki
with various events both large and small not only
for the heavy users of high culture but for everybody.
We are proud to be an official part of Helsinki
2000.
Images
and Imagination
The
presentations, panel discussions, talks, workshops,
films, parties and everything else guarantee an
interesting and entertaining weekend for everyone
with any interest in science fiction, fantasy, comics
or fandom. As if by accident the two main venues
surround the brand new museum of modern art - Kiasma.
This is an event that can not be missed.
